News from Mrs. Merriam

Congrats to ALL of our Nuckols Farm foxes for excelling in PAWsome ways every day. A special shout out to:
• Sam S., NFES Spelling Bee winner and runners up Ben A. and Ben B.
• Avery O., whose 5th grade Henrico Historical Awareness Project won third place in the Three Chopt Magisterial District
• All Reflections participants, whose projects were displayed in our library last month and whose accomplishments were celebrated last week
• Ella B., whose art currently represents Nuckols Farm’s outstanding art program at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden
• Our two amazing FLL Robotics teams, who represented our school at Godwin High School while the rest of us trotted at the Turkey Trot
• Kinga R., whose family team volunteered to keep our school grounds looking clean and spiffy through the Keep Henrico Beautiful program
• Our Community Service Club, SCA, Journal Buddies, Recycling Club, Morning Announcement crew, and Safeties, who spread good will and stewardship in and out of our school each day.

Registration for After School Enrichment opens Monday

Registration for Winter After School Enrichment begins on Monday, Dec. 4. Classes in drama, cooking, art, chess, kickball, basketball, music and computer coding will be offered on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons for 6 weeks beginning Jan. 2. Sign up by Dec. 17 - these classes fill up quickly. Registration will be online only. Contact Kristy Elliott with questions.

Last Chance to RSVP

Join us on Monday, Dec. 4 from 6-7:30 pm for a STEM + Families Math Night. We'll have free pizza for all who attend plus door prizes for parents and kids who participate in all 10 activity stations! All children must have an adult with them to engage in the evening's interactive games. Space is limited so RSVP by today, Dec. 1. Questions? Contact Becca Kutz.

NFE's annual Reflections program was held on Nov. 20. Students were recognized for their work reflecting this year's theme, "Within Reach," in literature, visual arts, photography, dance choreography, music composition and film categories. Students were judged in primary (K-2) and intermediate (3-5) divisions.

Congratulations to these first place winners who will advance to the Henrico County competition.

Congratulations to NFE’s two First Lego League (FLL) teams on great experiences at the FLL robotics tournament last month where they competed against 16 other elementary school teams on a hydrodynamics challenge.

The Fox BLOCSS team (pictured below, top) of fourth and fifth graders, Barrett D., Leo M., Owen B., Caleb S., Steven P. and Spencer C., placed 2nd in robot performance in Elementary School Division 1.

The Team Piheads team (pictured below, bottom) of fourth graders, Avery W., Alp S., Joseph C., Paul G. and Linden K., was the youngest team in the competition and wowed the judges with their knowledge and robot performance.

Thanks to coaches, Tom and Jenny Scott with Fox BLOCSS and Mandy Wilson with Team Piheads.

Support our Snack Drive

The Community Service Club is hosting a snack food drive for our sister school, Johnson Elementary, Dec 4-14. Individually-wrapped, store-bought snacks (no homemade) can be placed in the bins in the main hall. Snack ideas are fruit cups, granola bars, nabs, fruit chews, applesauce, pretzel and goldfish bags.

The next community service club meeting will be Dec. 14. Don’t forget to send a note giving your student permission to stay after school. Pick up is at 3pm!


 

Get Ready for Fun SCA Days

Dec. 7 is Hats on to End Cancer Day. Students can donate $1 to help The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program - and the chance to wear a hat all day during the school day.

Dec. 14 is Wacky Tacky Day. Dress in your wackiest, tackiest clothing - but be sure it follows dress code policies. Have fun, Foxes!




 

Calling all Scientists!

NFE’s annual Science Fair will be held Feb. 21 and 22, 2018. This is an event you won’t want to miss! Start thinking about your ideas now and watch for more information in January.

Looking for a fun way to help the environment and get involved before the school day begins? The Recycling Committee is looking for parent volunteers to help with recycling duties on Tuesday mornings from 7:15-8:00. Sign up today, or contact Allegra Simmons.

 

 

Sign Up for Classroom Winter Enrichment Activities

Winter enrichment activities will be held Dec. 13-15 with the exact day and time to be determined by each teacher or grade level. Watch for an email from your room parents, and check your Membership Toolkit account to sign up to send supplies or help in the classroom.

Remember to look for and clip Box Tops this holiday season! Planning to see extended family for your holiday celebrations? Ask them to bring you theirs, too! December/January collections sheets will be coming home soon. Check the graph on the back to see how your class is doing in the race for Box Tops!

Variety Show Auditions Begin Tuesday

Calling all talented 3rd-5th grade students! We’re looking for singers, dancers, jugglers, musicians, comedians, and actors for this year's Variety Show, which will be Tuesday, Jan. 23! Auditions will be held from 2:30-3:15 pm on Dec. 5 (5th grade), Dec. 6 (4th grade) and Dec. 7 (3rd grade). If your group has students in different grades, plan to attend the audition on the day for the youngest student. Questions? Contact Mrs. Davis.

 

There's Still Time to Support the Giving Tree

Thank you for your enthusiastic response to our Giving Tree this year! Be sure to check the Giving Tree in the front office for any remaining ornaments. Information listed on the ornament will indicate the child's gender, age, shoe size, shirt size, pant size, and toy suggestions. Please spend no more than $50, and return the wrapped gifts in a large bag with the informational ornament attached by Dec. 11. Contact Elyse Crockett with questions.

 

Parking at the Farm

With winter enrichment days approaching, please help us be a good neighbor by parking on the street when our parking lot is full. Do not park in the Virginia Women’s Center lot unless it is after 6 pm.
