SUBJECT: News from the Farm - Feb. 9, 2018

News from Mrs. Merriam

Happy February! What a great start to our month we have enjoyed! Our students were able to view the Variety Show dress rehearsal as a school community on Tuesday with an added teacher feature! The smiles on our children’s faces were priceless when teachers performed a surprise variety show piece of their own! They depicted older generation friends who had some impressive dance moves! Our evening Variety Show was fabulous as well, and I know our parents and other family members really enjoyed our Nuckols Farm fox performers. I certainly did! Many thanks to Mrs. Missy Davis and her special helpers for making this opportunity possible for our participants.

Mrs. Carolyn Luxton, kindergarten teacher, was our featured Nuckols Farm educator on HCPS’s Today’s Classroom show. The video is posted on our school’s web page and will air on Ch. 99/Xfinity or Fios/Ch 38 on Feb. 19-21. Thank you, Mrs. Luxton, for sharing your expert teaching skills!

We have three other staff members who have been recognized for their outstanding teaching skills. Our Nuckols Farm Gilman Teacher of the Year is Mrs. Kelley Martin, amazing second grade teacher. She, along with our First Year Teacher of the Year, fabulous first grade teacher Miss Emily Meade, and our spectacular Christie Award winner Mrs. Cathy Burrows, will be honored at the county level this spring. Way to go, Fox Teachers!

Valentine’s Day is upon us, and it is fun to celebrate our friendships with others on this holiday. Please remember we do not share edibles on this day. Our students have so many opportunities to have Valentine’s candy at home, and hopefully you and your children can enjoy yourselves with treats on Valentine’s Day evening!

It has come to my attention that several of our students are wearing expensive watches that are capable of a variety of communication feats. Please review the Cellular Phones and Electronics Devices section of our HCPS Code of Student Conduct. Simply put, if the device is capable of communication like a cell phone including making or receiving calls or text messages, the device should be off and out of sight during regular school hours, including bus time. Students should not be taking photos or using their devices for any other reason than to tell time. There are clocks in our classrooms and halls, and in elementary school, teachers facilitate the daily schedule. Distractions during instruction can often impact not only the wearer but also other students. As well, the use of a device during test administration is prohibited. Please consider all of the above if your child owns an electronic device that is capable of the actions above. Thanks so much for your support as we attempt to preserve instruction by eliminating distractions.

Last, I would like to assure every family that there will be a careful, thoughtful process including parent committee and staff input for selecting the next lucky leader of Nuckols Farm. Please know that the staff and I will work hard on class rosters, master schedule, and planning tentative dates/activities for next year prior to my retirement. I know our HCPS leaders will do their best to find the perfect fit for our wonderful school.

Don’t forget to send your children to school on February 19, which is now a full school day because of January’s snow days. Enjoy your February, and I look forward to seeing you at our annual Science Fair!

Your incredibly lucky principal,

Lisa Merriam

We still need volunteers for second, third, fourth and fifth grades.
