SUBJECT: News from the Farm - March 23, 2018

News from Mrs. Merriam

Dear Nuckols Farm Families,

Happy Spring! First, I have some safety reminders for our families who drive their children to school. If there is no staff member on the front porch, and the traffic sign has been turned to reflect that your student is tardy, PLEASE WALK INTO THE BUILDING WITH YOUR CHILD(REN). We have experienced several families who have dropped their children off on the porch and have driven away just this week. This is unsafe, and if your child is tardy, he or she must be accompanied into the building.

We continue to celebrate Youth Art Month with the Henrico ARTS Festival featuring fine art, a guest speaker, music and more. This event will be held at Douglas S. Freeman High School, and we have many students of all grades whose artwork is on display. Even if your student does not have art on display, this two-day event would be a fun activity for your family. It will be held Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25 from 10 am-4pm. There is more information regarding the schedule and featured artists on the HCPS website. Our Music In Our Schools Month activities included an absolutely adorable performance, Good As Gold, by our first graders on Tuesday evening and the ongoing DRUM and All County Chorus practices, which are really sounding good!

Mrs. Crockett has planned some great Career Day opportunities for our K-2 and 3-5 students. These events are a great opportunity for expanding students’ knowledge of job opportunities and helping them to understand the community around us. Thank you to all of you who are generously participating in this event.

As I shared with our PTA Board this week, our building will not house any programs this summer. Several rooms are being refloored, and work will be done within the school that prevents student activities from taking place at our location.

As we move towards spring break the first week of April, I hope each of you finds time to make some wonderful memories with your children. Hopefully our weather will reflect that spring is here, and you can enjoy some outside time!

Thank you for your support, and as always, come to visit us on the Farm!

Thanks to all the hospitality volunteers who helped show the NFE staff how LUCKY we are to have them. Teachers were treated to a baked potato bar at the March Hospitality luncheon.

Recognize a Top Teacher

Know a teacher who has made a difference in your life by inspiring, challenging, looking out for or helping your student succeed? Nominate him or her for the Henrico Citizen’s Top Teachers contest. Deadline is March 31.

Make A Gift in Honor of Mrs. Merriam

Thanks to generous Fox Fund donations over the years, we've been able to partner with Mrs. Merriam to host a variety of authors and cultural arts programs, support the purchase of reading instructional activities and Promethean boards, provide classroom and grade-level funding for teachers, and more. It's not too late to make a tax-deductible donation to the Fox Fund and ensure Mrs. Merriam's legacy continues into the future.

SCHOOL NEWS

April is School Library Month!

We will celebrate all month with fun activities and a dress up day!

Get wrapped up in great books! - Each class will be offered a 15 minute relax and read time in the library. During this time, students will be encouraged to bring a cozy blanket or towel, and we’ll “wrap ourselves up in good books” for 15 minutes. Your teacher will let you know what day to bring your cozy blanket or towel.

Review favorite books! - Students can go to Ms. Young’s webpage and fill out a review on one of their favorite books. Students will be chosen at random to share their reviews on our morning announcements show sometime during the month. Younger students are welcome to fill out the form with the help of a parent or sibling!

Dress up as characters! - On April 13, choose one of three options for dressing up. All outfits must meet the Henrico County Schools Dress Code and may NOT include wigs, hats or weapons.

  • Option 1: Wear wacky, tacky, and/or mismatched clothes to create your own interesting, crazy, or fun fictional character!
  • Option 2: Dress like one of your favorite book characters.
  • Option 3: Dress like someone who has made a positive impact on society. Choose someone you have studied or someone whom you admire for the good things they’ve done for their community or environment. It could be a specific person or a general community helper who does great things for their community.

Author Visit - Author and illustrator Lee Harper will visit the Farm on April 24. Mr. Harper has written and illustrated his own books and has collaborated with a variety of other authors to illustrate their books. Get more information about Mr. Harper.

From April 9-20, SCA will be collecting all types of denim clothing (jeans, shorts, jackets, etc.) for the HCPS Denim Drive at Regency Mall. Drop off food bank and denim items in the boxes outside the main office.

Get Ready to Jump Rope for Heart

Watch for information to come home soon about Jump Rope for Heart, which will be held on April 18 from 2:15-3:15 pm. Contact Mrs. Sweeney for details.

HCPS NEWS

School Safety Forum - March 28

HCPS will hold a school safety forum on Wednesday, March 28 from 6:30-8:00 pm at Hungary Creek Middle School, 4909 Francistown Road, to discuss safety at the County's 72 schools and program centers.

The forum will start with a short safety video and remarks from representatives of Henrico Police, Henrico Fire and the school division. Attendees will then be divided into small groups, led by a moderator, to present their thoughts and ideas about school safety. The event is open to the public.
