News from Mrs. Merriam

Dear Nuckols Farm Foxes,

I hope each of you enjoys a magnificent Memorial Day holiday! Our students and staff have been working so hard and look forward to a long weekend. Next week brings June, and with it comes a wide variety of end-of-year activities.

  • Our kindergartners have been learning about how plants and animals change over time and are so excited about participating in their first Field Day June 1.
  • Our first grade foxes have been participating in “Measurement Olympics,” reading fairy tales, comparing different versions of fairy tales, and working on various other projects.
  • Second grade will be busy being scientists exploring matter with hands-on lessons during two Explore Labs. They also had fun learning and investigating about the life cycles of plants, the white-tailed deer, butterflies and frogs.
  • Third graders are celebrating their Poetry Slam today and are working towards the construction of their inventions for the Invention Convention, which will be held in the cafeteria during the last week of school.
  • I always look forward to our fourth grade Mystery Festival, which is currently being set up by our faithful ExploreLab parent volunteers in C2. It is a fabulous way for our smart fourth graders to experience the fun of forensics. Fourth graders are also working on their Virtual Poetry Books and Restaurant projects while honing their kickball skills for their famous tournament.
  • Fifth graders have so many special days to end their elementary school experience ranging from Market Day to their luau and finally to their special awards assembly on Thursday, June 14 at 8:30 am.
  • Be sure to save the date on your calendar to come and dance with us at 8:30 on the blacktop on the last day of school, which is a half day with dismissal at 11:05.

Please keep in mind that our good neighbors, Virginia Women’s Center, do not have extra parking during business hours for our school patrons. Kindly do not park in their parking lot.

Enjoy a safe and fun long weekend making memories with your families!

Sincerely,

Lisa Merriam

Coming Soon: School Supply Kit Orders

Make back-to-school supply shopping easy this fall by ordering supply kits with everything your young fox will need for next year. Watch the NFE PTA web and Facebook pages next week for the order link and school code.

Place your order by June 22, and your items will be waiting for you at Open House in August.

Happy almost end of school, Fox families!

We are all excited about the recent announcement of our new principal, Mrs. Crystal Metzger. Mrs. Metzger is currently the associate principal at Shady Grove Elementary School, and your PTA board is looking forward to working with her to ensure the transition will be smooth for our community!

I look forward to serving as your PTA president this coming school year! Please don’t hesitate to let me know if I can answer any questions you have.

I hope you're able to slow time down and make some wonderful memories over the coming summer break!

Deb Harper, PTA President

Make Your Voice Heard Today!

We want to know how we can best serve our students, faculty, and families through the PTA’s programs and services. Your ideas on what works well and what you would like to see in the coming year will help us develop new programs and events for 2018-19 and beyond. Please take this brief survey and share your thoughts by the end of today, Friday, May 25.

Keep the Community Colorful

Have a bunch of old markers? Instead of throwing them away, let your PTA recycle them for you. We’ll have bins in the main hallway the last week of school. Leave your old markers (any brand), and we’ll pack them up and send them off to be recycled.

Recycling on the Farm

April's Annual Weigh Day was a success with Zachary C. in Mr. Wasserman's class winning the contest for the closest estimate. Based on the estimate of total recycling collected for each week, NFE will recycle an estimated 4,958 pounds (over 2 tons) this school year!

Thanks for Shopping!

Thanks to your support, NFE earned more than $3,100 through the Kroger Community Rewards program from June 2017 through February 2018. And, your purchases through AmazonSmile have raised more than $270. Thank you for supporting NFE and shopping at Kroger and AmazonSmile!

Access the Student Directory All Summer

Want to access the NFE student directory this summer? If you are a PTA member, you currently have access to the online directory (through the NFE PTA web site and the Membership Toolkit app), but at some point this summer, we will be temporarily disabling MTK access while we prepare for the new year. Be sure you print or download the directory pdf file, which is currently posted under the directory tab after you log into your MTK account, so you have directory access all summer. This is especially important for families who won’t be returning to NFE next year to access the new directory.

Congratulations to this Top Teacher

Look who was recognized as one of Henrico's Top Teachers by Henrico Citizen's readers. Congratulations to Mrs. Jill Bennett who makes every day exciting to learn on the Farm!

NFE Represented at Henrico 21 Program

Congratulations to NFE’s Henrico 21 teacher, Kelly Brinson, and student, Sarah C, representatives who were honored with other HCPS recipients on May 23. Thanks for the innovative ideas you’re sharing on the Farm!

From the Art Room

Exciting News! Greengate is having an arts festival June 9-10. Our students’ artwork will be featured and hanging up as 2x6-ft. flags at the entrance of Greengate off Broad Street. The themes are Maymont, the Richmond Zoo, VA Dogwoods with cardinals, and Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Many students of all grades have helped design, paint, cut, and put together these amazing and beautiful flags. Please come and enjoy the Arts Festival, the mural painters, food and other activities as well as the Nuckols Farm artwork. (The flags will be hanging up probably through June.) I am very proud of our talented foxes!
