SUBJECT: News from the Farm - September 7, 2018

Notes from Mrs. Metzger

Welcome Back, Foxes! It is hard to believe we have already completed week 1. What a great start to an exciting school year that will be filled with kindness, student growth, academic achievement, and parent / community involvement. This week our students have shown that “Kindness is the New Cool” as they have worked hard to demonstrate what we expect of all students each day, PAWS (Positive Attitude, Accept Responsibility, Work Hard, and Show Respect).

We have a year full of wonderful events planned for our Nuckols Farm students and families. We will kick-off the year with the PTA Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 20th. The PTA meeting will be pre-recorded and shared at the beginning of the evening. The schedule for Back to School Night is as follows:

6:00 – 6:15 pm â€“ Stop by the Cafeteria to Join the PTA, Sign Up to Volunteer, and Purchase Spirit Wear

6:15 – 6:35 pm â€“ Rotation 1

6:40 – 7:00 pm â€“ Rotation 2

7:05 – 7:25 â€“ Rotation 3

7:30 â€“ Back to School Night Concludes

Please ensure that you are in the classroom and settled for the brief PTA recording that will begin promptly at 6:15 pm. It is advised that you carpool, if possible, to avoid congestion in our parking lot. This is a parent-only event, so please make arrangements for your children on this evening. Also, please know that this is not an evening for parent conferences. Parent conferences will be scheduled in November and sign up information will be shared at a later time. Please note that the schedule above offers a five minute travel time between sessions and also offers the opportunity for a third session, if necessary. Please ensure that when the announcement is made to conclude a session that you begin making your way to the next classroom you need to visit so that the teacher can begin to prepare for their next session.

Finally, you will soon be receiving information about our upcoming Family Picnic on Wednesday, September 26th from 5:30 – 7 pm. We can’t wait to see you and your family at this event as we embark on another exciting school year. As always, thank you for your continued support!

In partnership,

Crystal Metzger, Principal

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Sign-up for a volunteer library shift on Membership Toolkit! The tasks are super easy, and it is a great way to see the school. Tasks include shelving, straightening, delivering media to classrooms and laminating. Contact Amy Lawson with questions.

Cafeteria volunteers are needed each week to hand out supplies and to assist students with opening packages. Shifts are 11:10-12:10 and 12:00-1:00 each day during lunch. Sign up to volunteer through Membership Toolkit or contact Sue Boling.

We are looking for coaches for this awesome program! FIRST LEGO League, Jr. is a STEM-based program that introduces students to building and engineering concepts through the use of LEGOs and later, robotics. Coaching a Lego League is fun and engaging as it teaches students about science and technology. Please email Jenny Scott, Lego League Coordinator, for more information.

For a complete list of volunteer opportunities on the Farm, be sure to check out the Volunteer Handbook . Questions? Contact Becca Kutz.

SCHOOL NEWS

The Birthday Book Club will again be part of our library program this year. This program has three purposes. It gives students special recognition on their birthdays (or half birthdays for summer babies), contributes to the expansion of our library collection and promotes the importance of reading. Students whose families donate $15 are allowed to choose a brand new book from the birthday book collection housed in our library on or around their birthdays, have their name put on a bookplate inside and be the first person to check out that book from the NFES Library. Donating money so that your child can choose a brand new book to add to our library collection in honor of his/her birthday makes his/her day at school memorable. Birthday Book Club forms were sent home during this first week of school so please check your child’s book bag or binder. If you cannot find the form or if you have questions, feel free to contact Ms. Young to request one.

SCA applications for students in 3rd, 4th or 5th grades are due on Friday, September 7 and are available in the main office.

A Reminder from Mrs. Sweeney

Don't forget to wear tennis shoes on P.E. Days!

Wednesday, September 19 is a half day of school. Students will be dismissed at 11:05 am.

Donate Extra School Supplies

The SCA school supply drive for our sister school, Henrico's Johnson Elementary, will end on September 7. Thank you to those that have already donated supplies!

SUPPORT THE FARM EVERY TIME YOU SHOP OR EAT!

Box Tops collection is back in full swing! Please send in your summer box tops by attaching them to the summer collection sheet or by placing them in a baggie with your teacher's name. Remember that each Box Top translates directly into money for our school, so send in what you have! September brings National Box Tops for Education Week, so it's a great time to get in the Box Tops spirit! Watch for the September collection sheet to come home soon. Be sure the expiration date is legible on each one you clip -- no expired tops, please.  Let's see which classes can collect the most this school year! The winners will get a prize at the end of the year, so get started now!

Need a quick meal idea? Order online from J. Rocco’s Pizza (select Nuckols Farm in the fundraising tab), or order online from Papa John’s (use code NFES). Both options benefit NFE and are valid all year!
