Notes from Mrs. Metzger

Dear Fox Families,

Today marks the end of the 2nd nine weeks which means that we are halfway through this school year. While we have only been back from winter break for a few weeks, we have much to celebrate at NFES. Congratulations to the following staff members:

  • Katherine Griffeth (P.E.) and Jaclyn Claytor (ILC) have been awarded a HEF Grant for $6,000. This funding will be used to purchase 12 Unruly Splat tiles and 12 iPads. The Unruly Splats and iPads will allow for technology and coding to be integrated into physical education across all grade levels. These resources will be an exciting addition to physical education instruction.
  • Cathy Brown, 5th grade teacher, has been recognized as the NFES Teacher of the Year.
  • Bailey Katsarelis, 2nd grade teacher, has been named the New Teacher of the Year.
  • Connie Daniels, Exceptional Education Teacher, has been recognized as the Christie Award recipient. This award recognizes an exceptional education team member who has been exemplary in service of students with disabilities and their families.

Safety is a top priority in Henrico County. New this year, the HCPS Office of School Safety and Emergency Management has created a family edition safety newsletter.  The January newsletter Safety Matters! Family Edition is linked for your review.

The phone system at NFES has recently been updated. Beginning on Monday, January 27, when you call The Farm you will be greeted with an automated message. The message will prompt you so that your call can be directed accordingly. Thank you for your patience as we transition to this new phone system.

Please mark your calendars with these upcoming dates:

  • Monday, January 27 â€“ Student Holiday
  • Tuesday, January 28 – Friday, January 31 â€“ Kindness Week
  • Thursday, January 30 â€“ Chick-fil-A Spirit Night 4 pm – 6 pm. Teachers will be there to greet families, refill drinks, serve the drive-thru, and deliver meals.  Last year this event was a huge success! We earned over $600 for our school!  Please come out again this year to support this event! The funds raised this year will go towards the purchase of a 3-D printer.
  • Friday, January 31 – Spirit Day - Football Team / Jersey Day
  • Thursday, February 6 – Parent Conferences – 2:30 pm – 6 pm

Thank you for your continued support!

In partnership,

Crystal Metzger, Principal

Can you solve the Rubik’s Cube?

If your child is interested in solving the Rubik’s Cube or in improving his or her speed in solving the cube, please read on…

We’re preparing for the Regional Rubik’s Cube Competition! Nuckols Farm will have a team of 8 students and 2 alternates to take to the competition. If your child is interested in being a part of the NFES team, we will have the following practices: Monday, Feb. 10, Wednesday, Feb. 12, and Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 2:15-3:00 pm in Mr. Wasserman’s classroom.

Students may come to 1 or all 3 of these practices in order to be timed, to practice, and to have fun! Bring a cube, but it must be an official Rubik’s cube with the Rubik’s logo. No speed cubes allowed.

The 10 fastest students, as timed by February 21, will be on the the NFES Team! Those selected will be invited to the team practices, from 2:15- 3:00 pm on the following Fridays: February 28 and March 6.

The students on the NFES Team must be able to attend the Regional Competition on Wednesday, March 11 from 4:00-6:30 at Holman Middle School.  Contact Mr. Wasserman with any questions.

Art Room Update

Thank you to all who have helped out in the art room this year! I appreciate it very much. Next week is our Chick-fil-A fundraiser...please come to support Nuckols Farm and to check out the art work displayed.

In the coming months, I will need help with clay projects for 5th grade, 2nd grade and Kindergarten and also with 2nd grade weaving. I am also short on glue sticks so if you would like to donate some, just send them to school with your children. Please send any tennis balls that you do not want for the art stools as well.

Thanks again,

Nancy J. de Nijs, Art Teacher
